finding images and acceptable files

If you don’t have enough - or any - high res photographs or illustrations, there are two options: either we can adapt the design to carry fewer pictures, or - recommended if you want your artwork to look hot - we can carry out a picture search and send you several professional images to choose from. Our finding fee is £75 for each image requested, which mostly covers our time and is therefore non-refundable in the event that you do not go ahead with the images we present. All the low cost library images for which we buy the rights on your behalf are royalty-free, which means that (subject to certain restrictions – ask us) you can use each one forever, on as many pieces of work as you like in print or on screen. So they’re excellent value.

Please remember that ‘visibility’ prices include cropping and resizing your images as needed but not retouching - if we have to do extra work or cut-outs (where a part of the photograph or a logo are extracted from their existing background and placed on a white or coloured background, rather than using the whole picture) we will charge £60 per image. So unless they're essential to your business it's often better to ask us to find professional ready-to-go images for you.

Our preferred image formats are:

  • High quality Jpgs, Tiffs or PhotoShop files for photographs, ideally converted to CMYK colours (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) ready for printing (RGB colours are for screens and won't reproduce as accurately on paper). If you can only supply high res Adobe Acrobat documents (.pdf) we may have to do extra work to extract the images and make them print-ready, for which we will make a small charge.
  • EPS files for vector artwork (in illustrations). However, we can generally work with Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files as well as high res Bitmap (.bmp), GIF (.gif) and PNG (.png) images.
  • Files with transparent backgrounds, especially for logos. A white rectangle with your logo inside it just doesn't look chic on a coloured background, so if you choose a style where the an image needs to be transparent, there will be a small extra charge to cut it out for you.

Importantly, please note that we can't use images lifted from websites as firstly, they may be protected by copyright and secondly, they're generally low res at 72dpi and won't be suitable for print. The only exception to this is if you already have the rights to use the image and want it on a new site we're building for you.
